The Blue Line Gallery
ushers in a new era for the arts in Roseville
Grand Opening February 2nd
Internationally acclaimed blockbuster exhibition
from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation
unveils new dimensions of Roseville Arts!
Roseville Arts’ Blue Line Gallery, the new community center for art and education, will open its doors to the public on February 2 with a blockbuster exhibition and grand opening festivities.
“The 5000 square foot Blue Line Gallery was conceived by Roseville Arts five years ago in a bold effort to better serve a community that has sustained and supported its efforts for more than 40 years,” said Kirk Taber, President of the organization.
Conveniently located in the first floor of the city’s new parking structure at 405 Vernon Street, the state-of-the-art space will feature exhibitions of international and national scope, as well as artwork by regional artists, with special opportunities for members, children and youth. In addition to exhibitions, the flexible space will host a variety of workshops, meetings, hands-on art activities, small arts performances, lectures and more.
The February opening broadcasts the grand results of a collective endeavor: a Herculean investment by donors—foundations, businesses and private individuals; collaboration with the City of Roseville; creative commitment by volunteers and staff; and the enthusiastic support of the community.
Grand Opening Exhibition
The highlight of the Grand Opening will be the featured exhibition, "Art and Illusion: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation." Curated by Billie Milam Weisman, this eclectic selection of paintings, photography and sculpture is drawn from a significant contemporary art collection begun by her late husband. Under Milam Weisman’s direction, the Art Foundation continues to reflect Frederick R. Weisman’s uncompromising belief in the cultural value of art and his commitment to share his extensive collection with the public.
“Art and Illusion” celebrates artists’ use of illusion and humor to create new ways of looking at the world. Visitors are invited into the contemporary art mindset where perception takes priority over representation; artists use different modes—physical, psychological, social, and so forth—to frame and even modify the viewer’s perceptual experience. The result is a selection of vibrant contemporary works with immediate visual impact and a focus on illusionism.
Over forty American and international artists are represented in the exhibition, including internationally acclaimed artists such as Andy Warhol, Charles Bell, Red Grooms and Masaaki Sato. "Art and Illusion” is made available to our community through funding provided by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in Los Angeles.
Grand Opening Activities
Roseville Art volunteers and staff will welcome the public on Grand Opening Day, Saturday, February 2, 12 Noon until 8:00 p.m. with docent tours of the exhibition, hands-on activities for children and families, and refreshments. Admission is free.
Celebrations will continue until the close of the “Art and Illusion” exhibit on May 3. Regular gallery hours will be Tuesdays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturdays, 1:00-8:00 p.m.; the 3rd Saturday of each month open until 9:00 p.m. in celebration of South Placer’s 3rd Saturday Art Tour.
During 3rd Saturday Art Tour in March, the gallery will host activities in conjunction with the opening of Roseville Arts’ 26th annual high school Student Show across the street at the Roseville Civic Center. And 3rd Saturday in April will feature Family Day at the new gallery.
Keeping Art in Our Future
Fulfilling its capital campaign promise to “Keep Art in Our Future,” the Blue Line Gallery will continue to nurture programs that focus on children and youth. Following the grand opening and throughout the spring, the gallery will host docent-let student tours, complete with curriculum materials for teachers at no cost to the school districts. Docents from William Jessup University’s teacher education program will train to lead educated and engaging tours through the contemporary exhibit.
Educational outreach will continue through ongoing programs including school tours, a children’s gallery, in-service teacher training, hands-on activities, collaboration with other arts groups and workshops and festivals to promote arts enjoyment and creative problem solving. Long-term, the goal is to invest in the future by contributing to the intellectual and societal benefits inherent in a healthy arts environment.
Vanguard in Downtown Revitalization Efforts
The Blue Line Gallery begins a new chapter in the 40-year partnership between Roseville Arts, a California non-profit corporation, and the City of Roseville. In recent years, as South Placer County has become one of the fastest growing regions in the country, Roseville has focused efforts on revitalizing its historic downtown. Tapping the energy and benevolent outreach of Roseville Arts and its volunteers, the City has characterized the Blue Line Gallery as a vanguard in these revitalization efforts. This cornerstone promises to serve as a model for arts education, community redevelopment, and volunteer recruitment and training.

Quotes:
Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council – “The City of Roseville and Roseville Arts have outdone themselves with this exciting collaboration. Congratulations on becoming a model for other California communities! The opening of the Blue Line Gallery will significantly enhance your revitalized downtown. The California Arts Council wishes you every success.”
Aldo Pineschi, Blue Line Gallery Capital Campaign Chair, stated, “Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised nearly $700,000 in our capital campaign to ‘Keep Art in our Future’. I invite everyone in the region to join us at the community celebration on Saturday, February 2 to share in the excitement of this jewel for Roseville."
Dolly & David Fiddyment, major campaign donors & Roseville pioneer family “The few citizens of Roseville who began Roseville Community Projects, Inc. in the 60’s could never have imagined the Blue Line Gallery. What a testimony to the people who have kept the arts alive in Roseville these 40 plus years. Their vision and hard work have brought us to this point, so it is time to congratulate and celebrate this new home of Roseville Arts and the people who made it possible.”
David Kelly, Roseville Arts Board of Directors -- "We are really fortunate to be able to open our doors with this caliber of exhibit,” said David Kelly, who as long-time member of Roseville Arts Board of Directors first recommended the Weisman collection as a potential source for exhibitions.”

Roseville Arts to Receive a $40,000 Grant from the James Irvine Foundation
Funding to Support Broadening and Diversification of Audiences
Roseville Arts will receive $40,000 over two years in support of a comprehensive marketing campaign to broaden and diversify current and new audiences in the Sacramento Valley. The funding is to be provided by the James Irvine Foundation’s “New Connections Fund”.
Roseville Arts executive director Barbara Dolder stated, “This generous funding from the James Irvine Foundation could not have come at a better time in Roseville Arts 40+ year history. Since March of 2005, we have been without a home base arts facility while our new facility, The Blue Line Gallery, has been under construction. Fortunately, during this time our administrative services have continued, thanks to a generous commitment by NEC Electronics America who provided office space. Exhibitions were held throughout the region under the title ‘Roseville Arts @...’ while off-site special events and on-line activities continued. However, as focus was diverted to a capital campaign and extensive strategic planning for future programming, programs and services once provided by a vibrant Roseville Arts Center were for the most part, absent. All that is about to change as we move into the new facility and launch programs that will be bolstered by the marketing campaign. Visitors to downtown Roseville will see immediate results from this funding. Beginning in January, 2008 bright blue and white banners will line Vernon Street heralding the grand opening of the Blue Line Gallery and the exhibition, “Art and Illusion” selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. And that’s just the start of the two-year plan!”
The James Irvine Foundation is a private, nonprofit grantmaking foundation dedicated to expanding opportunity for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, successful and inclusive society. The Foundation’s grantmaking is organized around three program areas: Arts, Youth and California Perspectives, which focuses on improving decision making on significant state issues. Since 1937 the Foundation has provided over $1 billion in grants to more than 3,000 nonprofit organizations throughout California. With current assets of over $1.8 billion, the Foundation expects to make grants of $75 million in 2007 for the people of California.

Blue Line Gallery to Open with Blockbuster Exhibition
February 2008 Grand Opening Announced
Roseville Arts has announced that it will celebrate the Grand Opening of its new Blue Line Gallery in February 2008 with an exhibition of contemporary art from the acclaimed collection of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.
The Gallery will open its doors to the public for the first time on February 2, 2008, from noon until 8 p.m., with its Grand Opening Exhibition, "Art and Illusion: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation."
Such a significant selection of contemporary art has never before been seen in Roseville. Including painting, photography and sculpture, the eclectic exhibition curated by Billie Milam Weisman celebrates artists’ use of illusion and humor to create new ways of looking at the world.
Contemporary art itself is often concerned with perception over representation, with how various modalities—physical, psychological, social, and so forth—not only frame but also modify the perceptual experience. The “Art and Illusion” selection reveals an emphasis on vibrant contemporary works with immediate visual impact and a frequent focus on illusionism.
Over forty American and international artists are represented in the exhibit, including such internationally acclaimed artists as Andy Warhol, Charles Bell, Red Grooms and Masaaki Sato. "Art and Illusion” is made available to our community through funding provided by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.
The Blue Line Gallery—frontispiece to Roseville’s new parking structure on Vernon Street and vanguard in the City’s downtown revitalization efforts—is in final construction mode as it prepares for the February opening. The gallery serves as the new permanent home for Roseville Arts, the result of ongoing collaboration with the City; Herculean investment by private, individual and business donors; and creative commitment by volunteers and staff.

Roseville Arts’ “Building the Future” a Big Hit!
On Saturday, June 16, Roseville Arts celebrated the start of construction of its new home—the Blue Line Gallery to be located on the ground floor of the City of Roseville’s Vernon Street parking structure. “Building the Future”—a “kick-back”, construction-themed event—took place in the Roseville Civic Center Plaza and Rotunda under perfect weather conditions. Taking place mainly outdoors, the crowd enjoyed music, food, beverages, an upscale raffle, a silent auction, tours of the under-construction Blue Line Gallery, and the exhibition “Online with the Blue Line” held in the Civic Center Rotunda.
During announcements, Diane Williams, chair of the event, welcomed attendees and thanked the many sponsors who made the evening possible. Aldo Pineschi, “Keep Art in our Future” capital campaign chair, thanked the donors for their support and updated the community on the campaign progress.
A special presentation was made by Mrs. Melena A. Ose to June Wanish, recipient of the “Make it Happen! Award”. The award is intended to honor a local leader in the arts community who, through creativity, passion and dedication, has expanded community participation in the arts, and taken a nonprofit organization to a higher level. Mrs. Ose presented a check for $15,000 to Mrs. Wanish who responded that the funds would be placed in the Roseville Arts’ “ June Wanish Endowment for the Arts” designed to help ensure the future of the arts in Roseville. The award is made possible through the Enlow & Melena A. Ose Endowment for the Arts of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.
Jim Williams, Williams + Paddon, architects for the Blue Line Gallery, served as emcee for the evening, and completed the announcements by presenting a brief history of Roseville Arts—past, present, and future.
The evening was capped off with announcements of winning silent auction bids, three artfully designed hard hats by artists Tony Natsoulas, Margot Comer, and Karen Fulk; the raffle prize drawing; and finally the winner of the grand prize—a wine refrigerator, fully stocked with premium wines. Ironically, the winner of the wine refrigerator—Tom Millward, Mayor of Loomis—was the very first to purchase a raffle ticket from chairperson, Diane Williams during the spring “Cap-to-Cap” trip to Washington DC.

Online Resource Connects Community to Regional Artists
Business and art communities already applauding this new Directory of Artists
Roseville Arts’ new online Directory of Artists provides a welcome resource for businesses and community to connect directly to regional artists for exhibit and purchase options.
The new internet tool has already proved useful to one local business, a leading semiconductor provider. "NEC Electronics America will continue to use this directory as a resource for artwork to enhance our manufacturing facility in Roseville," said Gail Reinke, senior manager, site administration, manufacturing operations, NEC Electronics America, Inc. "Our employees, customers and international visitors enjoy the art we have featured, and I highly recommend the directory to businesses who want to showcase the extraordinary work of our regional artists."
Viewable at www.rosevillearts.org, the Directory of Artists currently features over 200 selections of artwork by more than 40 artists, with artists signing up daily as they recognize the quality and potential of this new resource. “We have already gotten compliments on the Artist Directory from our friends in Austria, Switzerland and Wisconsin,” wrote acclaimed artists James Hirschinger and Imi Lehmbrock-Hirschinger, who endorse the Directory as a high quality community resource.
Associated with the much anticipated Blue Line Gallery in downtown Roseville, the Directory was developed by a committee of artists and staff at Roseville Arts to address multiple needs in fast-growing South Placer communities. Businesses and private collectors will use the Directory to find regional artists for their display needs. Artists will benefit through increased exposure and sale of their fine art. And communities will flourish with more art in their environments.
Complete information on the Directory is available at www.rosevillearts.org/directory. Questions may be directed to 916-783-4117 or roseart@surewest.net.

Description of Homes & Gardens:
#1 Come to a Garden Party:
What a perfect place to enjoy an outdoor party, and the owners welcome you to their mature (20 year old) garden. The mastermind behind this serene setting is the homeowner himself. Among many of his projects are a bonsai table and several water features both in the back and front of the house. You are encouraged to look into the greenhouse for orchids and more sensitive plants. And while there are many Asian features, there is also a traditional English rose garden, complete with the requisite four quadrants. The pond in the front yard reminds one of a Monet scene, and, for a whimsical touch, don’t miss the “face in the tree” in the backyard.
#2 How to Lure a City Boy to the Country
Both home and garden were designed by the homeowner to entice her husband out of the city! The backyard is set along equestrian trails with mature oaks. It features a putting green and horseshoe pit next to a Koi pond complete with a signed Leonardo Rossi sculpture of a young man fishing and “the fish that got away” water feature. The gazebo overlooks a waterfall that flows into a rock bottom swimming pool. Follow stepping stones past a fire pit and a 150 year old buckboard wagon. The outdoor kitchen, patio area and sound system hidden within the landscaping make this the perfect place to keep the city boy in the country!
#3 Creativity in Every Room
There are many aspects in this home that bear the stamp of the owner’s handiwork, including the dragonfly table in the dining room, the faux painting on the walls in several rooms, the chest in the master bedroom and the painting of her uncle upstairs. She also made the stencil, did the wall painting and sewed the draperies in the charming guest room upstairs. There are several Russian touches in the house—three paintings downstairs (the surrealistic ones) and the stunning vase on a shelf in the den upstairs. The chest in the living room is from Tibet and the one in the dining room is an antique, with an Asian origin. For a creative idea, note how Christmas ornaments enliven the chandelier in the kitchen.
#4 Life with an Artist
Walk down the driveway surrounded by a vineyard, toward the courtyard filled with lavender and climbing roses and to a fountain with geese statuary. Entering, you will look through the house, over the infinity-edged pool at a view of the lake. To the right is an art gallery hallway with pieces by Joe Strickland, Mya Louw, David Wiley and others. Notice a “Beaded Lady” at the base of the stairs and an original Mendocino watercolor by John Zacha. Upstairs in the art studio are original paintings by the owner. Returning through the great room, you’ll see a triptych by Vicki Asp which was specially painted for the home. As you exit the gourmet kitchen under a white wisteria-covered trellis, enjoy the Provence themed landscape.
#5 The Ultimate Horse Property
A large metal rearing horse in front announces that this is a special place. The owners designed and helped build this beautiful Santa Fe inspired home. Right away you’ll see a special design in the tiled floor of the entrance. Note the kiva fireplaces, the unusual shower in the master bathroom and the lovely “gallery” room with paintings by Mya Louw and Linda Green. Anyone would be inspired to cook in this wonderful kitchen. There is an “in-law suite” with living room incorporated into the home. Don’t miss the swinging beds in the girls’ rooms or the zip line that is often put to good use in the private lake.
Participating Artists:
Cathie Andrews, Diane Ruhkala Bell, Sarah Croft, Eve Dorf, Virginia Edwards, Michele Feinberg, Ursula Johnson, Felicia Lamb, Mya Louw, Deanna Marsh, Anje Olmstead, Anna Rolin, Lynn Scholl, Joan Sexton, Carol Smyth, Judi Stickney, and Diane Tharp

“Keep Art in our Future” campaign receives a boost!
Roseville Arts received a generous donation on March 8 from MV Public Transportation in support of its “Keep Art in our Future” capital campaign. The campaign is nearing its financial goal toward completion of Roseville Arts’ Blue Line Gallery, a 5,500 sq. ft. arts facility planned for the ground floor in the City of Roseville’s Civic Plaza Parking Structure on Vernon Street in downtown.
In a ceremony that took place in front of the construction site, MV’s founder, Alex Lodde presented the donation to Roseville Arts’ Capital Campaign Cabinet Chair, Aldo Pineschi and Roseville Arts’ Executive Director, Barbara Dolder. Taking part in the ceremony were Roseville City Manager, Craig Robinson; “Keep Art in our Future” campaign cabinet members and Roseville City Council Members Gina Garbolino and John Allard; and MV Transportation executives Jay Jeter, Rich Frost, and Phil Garth.
MV Transportation Inc. provides public transportation services to residents of Roseville. Based in Fairfield, California, MV Transportation is the largest minority and privately-owned passenger transportation firm in the country. MV contracts with more than 140 local governments and transit agencies in 26 states and the District of Columbia and employs more than 10,000 transit professionals. In a letter addressed to Roseville Arts, MV Public Transportation President, Kevin Klika wrote, “We believe the arts help to connect the generations, to appreciate what we all have in common and what makes each of us unique. A strong arts program in a community serves to empower young people, giving many the means to express themselves, and to build self esteem. The arts help to beautify, to enrich and define communities. We are proud to play a role in ensuring that the future of the arts in Roseville is secure, and we commend you for the work you do.”
To find out more about the “Keep Art in our Future” campaign and how to be a part of the effort, call Ms Dolder at 916-783-4117; email rosearts@surewest.net.

Aldo Pineschi: “We appreciate this most generous donation of $10,000 from MV Transportation. MV has joined an impressive list of donors that have pledged more than $650,000 to our campaign”.
Craig Robinson: “MV Transportation provides our residents with excellent transportation services. We appreciate its generous contribution to furthering the revitalization of our downtown. The City of Roseville has invested $30 million in downtown revitalization and is implementing an aggressive economic development strategy. Roseville Arts is an integral part of our redevelopment plan as arts and cultural activities are important components of community revitalization, drawing citizens to the central city.”
Gina Garbolino: “The Blue Line Gallery will include a main gallery, a children’s gallery/classroom, a workshop, an artists’ library, and a gift shop right in the middle of Roseville’s redevelopment area. Neighborhoods within the area will most certainly benefit from having a facility within walking distance for themselves, their children and future generations to enjoy. Artist Anthony Natsoulas Selects Artwork for Roseville Exhibit
Sacramento artist Anthony Natsoulas has made final selections for Roseville Arts’ 31st National Open Show. The exhibit will celebrate its opening with a reception and awards presentation at the 2237 Gallery in Roseville on September 2, 2006.
As show juror, Natsoulas selected fine artwork by 28 artists from the 93 who submitted work from 14 different states. The opening reception will feature an 8pm awards presentation announcing Natsoulas’ selection of the exhibit’s $1000 Best of Show and other cash award winners. The exhibit is open to the public September 2-29 at the 2237 Gallery, 2237 Douglas Blvd in Roseville--during the September 2 reception, 6:30-9pm; South Placer's 3rd Saturday Art Tour, September 16, 6:30-9pm; and weekdays, 7am-6pm.
"It takes a special strength to want to have one's artwork judged," wrote Natsoulas in his juror’s statement. One of the things Natsoulas keeps in mind when looking at artwork is whether or not the piece inspires him or makes him think about the world in a new way. "As artists, this is a very hard thing to control because there is such a wide degree of tastes in the world, which hinge not only on the visual aspects of a piece of art, but also on what the viewer brings to the piece."
A portion of proceeds from artwork sales will benefit the non-profit Roseville Arts as it continues to bring quality art and art-related programs to the region.
Williams + Paddon Architects + Planners Inc., Lafler, Moore Connerty & Webb are hosting this Roseville Arts exhibit for the second year in a row in their 2237 Gallery. Roseville Arts is eagerly awaiting a permanent, state-of-the-art gallery currently under construction in downtown Roseville. Its offices are temporarily located at NEC Electronics America, 7501 Foothills Blvd., Roseville, CA 95747. (916) 783-4117.

ROSEVILLE, CA APRIL 21, 2006 The Roseville Arts capital campaign—Keep Art in our Future—is almost at goal, according to an announcement made during a reception honoring late Roseville City Councilman Earl Rush amid his collection of vintage photographs on Friday evening, April 21 in the Roseville Civic Center.
Roseville Mayor Gina Garbolino welcomed participants, including Virginia Rush, stating, “It is fitting that this announcement is being made as we pay tribute to the artistic talents of Earl Rush and to his love for the arts. As a councilman, Earl knew the importance of arts in a community, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the arts were an integral part of the Roseville community. This exhibition not only honors the private, unheralded talents of an important public figure; it also symbolizes the value of the public-private partnership between The City of Roseville and Roseville Arts.”
In an extraordinary public-private alliance, the City of Roseville is providing Roseville Arts with 5,000 square feet on the first floor of the new Vernon Street parking structure. The organization’s new home will be known as “the blue line gallery.” The “Keep Art in our Future” capital campaign is being conducted to fund tenant improvements in the new space.
