Celebrating Roseville
Blue Line Gallery exhibit delights with nostalgia & surprise!
The Blue Line Gallery opens Celebrating Roseville: A Centennial Exhibit during 3rd Saturday Art Walk on May 16. The exhibit will showcase contemporary images of the face of Roseville—original paintings, photographs and collage—as the City celebrates its 100th anniversary.
“The exhibit is not entirely predictable, as you might expect,” said Beth Rohlfes, curator for the gallery. “Certainly nostalgia will be present, but there will also be some delightful surprises in the images that were selected as well as in the artists’ unique interpretations.”
Original artwork will be for sale, and members of the City’s Centennial Committee will help select artwork for reproduction and sale as an official centennial print. A limited number of these centennial prints are expected to be available for purchase by early June.
Also planned over the run of the show and during the City’s Downtown Tuesday Nights—visitors of all ages will be invited to participate in a “Paint the Town” mural project beginning Saturday, May 23. . . and in a repeat of a performance that delighted crowds last July, sand sculptor Kirk Rademaker will bring his magical skills to play, once again, in a giant sandbox at the center of the gallery.
The Celebrating Roseville exhibit will continue at Roseville Arts Blue Line Gallery through July 10. The Gallery is located at 405 Vernon Street, on the first floor of Roseville’s parking garage. Regular hours are Tues-Fri, 10-5 and Sat, 1-8; 3rd Saturdays until 9pm. Hours for Downtown Tuesday Nights, May-July: Tues, 5-8pm.

Hundreds of guests were treated to an eclectic celebration—including artist demonstrations and an awards presentation—during March’s 3rd Saturday at the Blue Line Gallery. The event marked the opening of both High School Student Show 2009 and the Blue Line Artists’ themed show, Faces.
“The Student Show is one of my favorite exhibits hosted by the Gallery,” said Carol Garcia, who attended as representative for the exhibit sponsor, Granite Community Bank. The annual exhibit, now in its 28th year, showcases the best student artwork from high schools in Granite Bay, Lincoln, Loomis, Rocklin and Roseville.
Garcia joined Roseville Arts board member Cindy Strickland, Curator Beth Rohlfes and artist Kristin Aplin (representing juror Everett Jensen) during the evening’s award ceremony. Best of Show award was presented to Jasmine San Juan, Woodcreek High School in Roseville, for her pastel portrait, Chequered Accentuation. “Keep up the great work!” wrote Jensen in his written juror’s statement for the Student Show, where he also thanked the participating students for giving him “the best gift you can make to other artists” by inspiring him to return to his studio “with renewed energy and inspiration.”
Also opening during 3rd Saturday was Faces, a portraiture exhibit showcasing work in various media by five Blue Line member artists: Karen Calden Fulk, oil paintings and clay sculpture; Linda Green, acrylic paintings; Craig Johnson, photography; Marsha Mobley Kilian, pastel; and Michael Pierce, watercolor.
Green took a turn on stage Saturday painting and sharing her intimate journal of writings and sketches that preview her final work. Craig Johnson shared storyboards showing the photographer’s process from clicking the picture to final art photograph. And Marsha Mobley Kilian demoed photo shooting as preparation for her painted portrait commissions.

Deadline to Register March 11!
Roseville Arts invites you to “leave the driving and parking to us” as we travel by bus to San Francisco to experience the fantastic exhibition: “Artistic Luxury: Fabergé, Tiffany, Lalique” at the Legion of Honor.
Fabergé, Tiffany and Lalique’s rivalry found its stage at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris – the only exposition where all three showed simultaneously and where the work of each was prominently displayed. Recreating the ambiance of this opulent show, this exhibition explores how these designers responded to the demand for luxury goods in the years leading up to World War I.
The bus will leave from Roseville’s Saugstad Park at 8:30am and return at approximately 6:30pm on Saturday, April 4, 2009. The cost is $61 for Roseville Arts members and $67 for non-members and will include transportation, donuts en route, museum admission including an audio tour. Time for a no-host lunch or brown bag.
The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 11, 2009. For more information or to register, call Roseville Arts at (916) 783-4117. Or visit the website: www.rosevillearts.org and click on “tours & events”.

The Long and The Short of It
at Roseville’s Blue Line Gallery
Artists Win Big in Annual Membership Art Competition
Hundreds of guests celebrated the opening of the Blue Line Gallery’s The Long and The Short of It membership exhibit Saturday evening, January 17, to the relaxed tunes of the band Breez and a generous flow of animated conversation and refreshments characteristic of Roseville’s 3rd Saturday Art Walk.
Juror Frank Zamora noted that the “excellent work . . . is evidence of the great depth within a diversity of styles.” A highly recognized artist and long-time art instructor at Sacramento City College, Zamora also complemented the gallery and its volunteers. “Of equal merit is the effort . . . in organizing and displaying the work in this beautiful and spacious facility.”
The show’s theme, “The Long and The Short of It” inspired some creative new approaches from the 107 participating member artists. The gallery walls showcase mostly short and tall fine art pieces, including all varieties of painting, printmaking, photography encaustic and collage. These are punctuated with large pieces selected through lottery, as well as twenty pieces of sculpture. Most work is for sale, and the variety of sizes and styles presents a broad range of options for art collectors.
Roseville Arts’ board member Rashida Lilani introduced the awards ceremony Saturday evening by welcoming visitors to the Blue Line Gallery, which is celebrating its first anniversary on February 1. Cash awards were then presented to the following artists: Best of Show, Frederick Herschleb, for his sensitive and delicately textured watercolor, “Force of Nature” and Juror’s Pick, Annie Murphy-Robinson for her fine charcoal drawing, “Casey with Red Ball.”
Merit Awards went to Diane Ruhkala Bell, for her metal textured lace dress, “Waiting and . . . Waiting for the Wedding;” Elaine B. Rothwell, for her large abstract oil, “Picnic;” Noel Sandino, for her bold acrylic, “My Paradise;” and Philip Sargent, for his woodturned Cottonwood Burl Winged Bowl.
Honorable Mention Awards went to Steve Dillon for his creatively formatted photograph, “Rainbow Eucalyptus;” Barbara Killeen, for her light and airy watercolor, “Hachiya Persimmons;” Michael Murphy, for his mind-bending collage, “Perception of Reality #4: 1960 Stanford Binet;” and Rick and Janet Nicholson, for their Renewal Floor Lamp, a sophisticated fixture made of blown glass and hand-forged steel. One last award, Staff’s Choice, Theme Award went to Joe Strickland, for his playful mixed media piece, “Long Short Story.”
“The Long and The Short of It” continues at the Blue Line Gallery through March 13. Located at 405 Vernon Street in Roseville, the gallery offers revolving art exhibits and art-related programs for children and youth. The gallery is open and free to the public, Tues-Fri, 10am-5pm and Saturdays 1-8pm; until 9pm on 3rd Saturdays of every month. Free and ample parking is conveniently located in the overhead parking garage. For more information about programs and upcoming exhibitions, see www.rosevillearts.org.
