Blue Line Gallery Grand Opening Exhibition

Art and Illusion: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation

February 2 - May 3, 2008

405 Vernon Street Suite 100, Roseville

Roseville Arts is excited to present “Art and Illusion: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation” as the Grand Opening Exhibition for the new Blue Line Gallery.

Such a significant selection of art has never before been seen in Roseville. Including paintings, photography and sculpture, the eclectic exhibition curated by Billie Milam Weisman celebrates artists’ use of illusion and humor to create new ways of looking at the world.

Many exceptional works of art by world-renowned artists are housed in private collections.  Thanks to the generosity of art collectors such as Frederick R. Weisman, these masterpieces are accessible to a wide audience to experience and appreciate.

Mr. Weisman and his wife began their personal collection of modern and contemporary art in the 1950s. Over the years, the collection has grown to include over one thousand paintings, sculptures, and multimedia works from 20th century artists such as Picasso, Cezanne, Ernst, Magritte, de Kooning, Rothko, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Oldenburg and Ruscha.

As his greatest and most enduring contribution, the late entrepreneur, philanthropist, and art collector established the Frederick R Weisman Art Foundation in 1982. Today, the Foundation continues to carry out Mr. Weisman’s vision under the direction of Billie Milam Weisman through loans to museums and galleries worldwide, docent tours at Los Angeles estate, grants and educational programs.

The “Art and Illusion” selection reveals an emphasis on vibrant contemporary works with immediate visual impact and a frequent focus on illusionism. A curtain of candy wrappers, a three-legged feline satyr, and a hot pink motorcycle installed amid an array of realistic paintings and abstract works attests to Frederick R. Weisman’s interest in illusion which to him was a form of magical transformation that was the source of all true creativity.

Over 40 American and international artists are represented in the exhibit including such acclaimed artists as Andy Warhol, Charles Bell, Red Grooms and Masaaki Sato. “Art and Illusion” is made available to our community through funding provided by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.
