RICK and JANET NICHOLSON
Blown Glass

Rick and Janet’s dedication to glass blowing is evident in the excellent quality of their work. The emphasis in their small studio is on creativity and innovation. Each piece is a free-hand expression of the excitement and risk-taking only found in an experimental glassblowing studio.

They have worked together as a successful team since 1979 and occupied their Auburn studio since 1981.  Rick has studied at Pilchuck Glass School over the years with such notables as Dale Chilhuly, Fritz Dreisbach, Therman Statom, Richard Marquis and Dino Rosin and recently, with Karen Willenbrink-Johnson at the Eugene Glass School.

Their work involves figurative sculpture, sculptural lighting and elegant, asymmetrical bowl and vessel forms. The new Landscape Series of sculptural wall and ceiling installations are inspired by their travels together in the California foothills and beyond. Many works have been commissioned for hotels, businesses and private residences locally and internationally. Rick’s studies in metals, hot sculpting and glass casting have allowed their work to expand. While Rick is the master glass blower, Janet is the color and design part of their collaboration. They are currently assisted by Matt Eaton.

The Nicholsons are represented locally by the W Gallery, Sacramento; Bennett Gallery, Placerville; The Mowen Solinsky Gallery, Nevada City and Auburn Old Town Gallery, Auburn. Their studio is open annually for Mother’s Day weekend in May and in November and December for the holidays. They are also available by appointment.
